Citizens For Great Falls renews call for 20 mph pilot on Georgetown Pike
Citizens For Great Falls is urging Fairfax County to include Georgetown Pike through the Great Falls business district in the county’s new 20 mph speed pilot program.
In a June 11 email to Dranesville District Supervisor James Bierman, President John Halacy said the stretch from Stephanie Circle east to Innsbruck Avenue should be selected as the district’s pilot location. He said the corridor is currently posted at 25 mph and carries heavy traffic through the community’s main business district, where it functions as both a village main street and a regional pass-through.
Halacy praised the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors for unanimously approving the 20-mph pilot program on June 10. He said the planned pedestrian refuge and Library Crosswalk in the business district would be safer if paired with a lower speed limit.
He also said the county’s recent code amendment has clarified that roads in residential or business districts with an existing 25 mph speed limit are eligible for the pilot. Citizens For Great Falls said it is prepared to support the effort through outreach and public engagement.
